It won't work with the old init either -- as mentioned this is a design
decision for "edgy"; we chose to make the boot silent.
If you want the boot messages, you need to remove "quiet" from the
kernel command line.

I really meant in the usplash box, the one where init is meant to spit
out the start status of the boot scripts, hence the upstart package
affected (worked with the old init).

That's a feature (or at least I think it is ;) ) to have message edit
/boot/grub/menu.conf and take out "quiet" of the boot options.
