That's the problem. The first commit you showed is a fix in 2.6.18 that
was a regression from 2.6.17 (2.6.17 already worked like this).
The second commit for ext2 is already in our 2.6.17 tree, pulled in from
2.6.17.y.
Not to mention that there are probably hundreds of "fixes from 2.6.17"

No idea what you expect me to do with this bug report. Edgy wont be
using 2.6.18 kernel, and I'm not just going to go through the
ChangeLog-2.6.18 and pull everything that seems interesting.
