This bug affect my fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 alpha 3 + updates.
N: Ignoring file 'xorg-edgers-ppa-maverick.list.save' in directory
'/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension

You can always run the following commands to remove the .save and
.distUpgrade files temporarily but they seem to be created again rather
quickly.
cd /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
sudo rm *.save
sudo rm *.distUpgrade
If this bug isn't fixed there might be a lot of confusion when people
update for the

/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99ignoresave
Not sure if the dot in front of 'save' needs to be escaped - seems to
work without it (won't match 'foosave').

I can confirm what you're seeing and I don't think it's intentional, but
I guess you should open a new bug report, since this one is about the
warnings about backup files.

I removed ( backuped ) all those invalid sources but apt-get autoremove
does not remove unneeded packages. As well Synaptic does not show
unneeded packages ( automatically installed and without packages
depending on them ) even though I know there are removable packages...
