Thanks for your bug. That's cairo being slower than splash, I've changed
the poppler package to use splash again:
poppler (0.5.3-0ubuntu9) edgy; urgency=low
.
* Build with splash for now, the cairo backend is much slower
(Ubuntu: #61161)

- applied the changes
I see this as well; it seems noticeably slower than it used to be.
