Micah, I have reinstalled Dapper Drake and re-tested with a couple of different kernels and a couple of different DVDs, but cannot reproduce the problem. It looks like either: a) the DVDs I had, which read okay on the 233MHz Pentium box but not on my Vaio were in some way corrupt; or

Some filesystems (vfat, for instance) do not support files with sizes greater than 4GiB. Your problem is unlikely to be the source (since it's reading only 2KiB at a time); it's much more likely to be the destination.
