The "failed to initialize HAL" error actually comes from update-notifier
(see bug #81670).

Xubuntu 6.06.1 has the same effect. The OS shouldn't let you login
before it is ready! BTW, what is HAL? My system seems to work even if I
get the error..

I see this error everytime I login in ubuntu 6.10 before the complete start of
boot service.
If I wait 30 seconds (and wait for the hard disk to stop reading) and then
login in system this error doesn't appear

I got the error again when I started computer today. The error does not happen
after every boot. For what it is worth, I have executed the script given in

(I am planning to upgrade to Edgy.)
