It is a broken link.
/etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so -> /usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-
ubuntu.so
The only file in /usr/lib/usplash is the following:
/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-artwork.so -> /etc/alternatives/usplash-
artwork.so
That of course is broken, too, since it links to a broken link.
Take a look at the symlinks for the usplash
ls -l /etc/alternatives/usplash-artwork.so
is it a broken symlink? if not follow it to its location, more than likely
/usr/lib/usplash/usplash-theme-(k,edu,x)ubuntu.so

I went ahead and installed the 2.6.17-6 kernel and restricted modules,
because I got a dependency issue on the latest ubuntu-desktop upgrade
due to usplash not configuring. usplash then configured as expected,
except that I do not get a splash screen with the 2.6.15 kernel. I
assume it is not mak
I have the restricted modules for my kernel. I uninstalled the kernel
and modules for the 2.6.17 kernels, because I couldn't get my wifi to
work with that kernel and with each upgrade I was getting grub menu.lst
overwritten and pointing to the wrong partition.
I had done a backup of dapper pri
try installing the restricted-modules for your kernel and than try sudo
dpkg --configure -a

I get the same error.
