I believe I have the same problem, was a showstopper for me as well, I
have an Ati X700 PCIE in my laptop. But the screen did not go blank,
but first displayed lots of vertical lines, then lots of horizontal
lines before giving up and displaying a badly mangled X dialog that X
couldn't be started.

The problem also occurs if you install Edgy with an alternate install
CD. The problem seems to be in xserver-xorg-video-ati. If you boot the
PC in single mode and do an dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and change the
video card from ati to vesa the desktop starts at the next reboot. Maybe
