When I didn't get a reply to the above, I opened a "question" ticket at
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/127856. I also
tracked down the ModemManager developers at http://www.betavine.net .
After a few exchanges, I managed to fix the problem myself, and Nicholas

I am experiencing the very same error connecting a Nokia E73 (branded,
T-Mobile USA) to a stock Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation on 32-bit (AMD
Athlon XP) system. Connecting the phone causes the ttyACM0 device to
appear, but setserial cannot read the port (I assume it should?):
$ sudo setserial /de
I found out that the problem was due to a missing "modemmanager" package
and NOT due to the kernel.
