No, we don't want to add a gconf key for it. The X server bug that this
change works around affects every driver with the exception of the
proprietary NVIDIA driver. We're not going to provide a key to allow for
most users to break their systems.

Hey,
Because I like the fade effect as well I made a patch for it.
It creates a new gconf key called fa_on_lock_enabled that toggles the fade
effect.
By default is FALSE but when TRUE it enables it.
This seems a better approach, if there is any interest in it I can
improve it.
