Have the same problem here after upgrading to 10.04
Solution for me is to unset no_proxy variables, no_proxy was set to
"localhost,127.0.0.0/8,*.local,irc.x.de,"
And sometimes i have to change https_proxy because its set to an
https://proxy url and not to an http:// url which i used in the gn
** Also affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu)
