Little update on this: most issues seem to be gone, only on shutdown
usplash still is lower-res then on boot and the part from GDM to usplash
is still garbed. normal consoles work again though, so it'S usable
again, thanks.

Ok... but I also forgot that the part between gdm and usplash, where you
normally see a few lines of text for a second is garbage, too. Is this
actually a kernel problem or something usplash does?

I can second that, I'm using up-to-date edgy on my notebook (no vmware).
Screenshots 1 & 3 totally match, so while booting, usplash displays relativly
hi-res, but with gray background insted of black. note that this is a
regression, the former version of usplash (0.4.something, which I got when
