My problem has been solved. I don't know what exactly did it. It might
be the latest alsa drivers. One thing still remains. If i start firefox
and play any video, and then try to record using my mic, it does record
but no sound is played back. The fix is to restart firefox. I will have
to look into

With "arecord -v -D plughw:0,0 -f CD -d 30 test.wav" something was
recorded; a file was created but on playback I could hear nothing even
with the volume turned up to max.

When I typed that on a terminal, it just went crazy with lots of ascii
character like objects filling up the terminal. The mic is still not
recording though.
