I have upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 and still having some of same problems.
I can only play some DVDs still can't play farm town.

As of April 30, Ubuntu 8.10 has reached End-of-Life. (See announcement:

latest version of Ubuntu, Lucid Lynx (10.04) and see if your problems
have been addressed in a year and a half.
