Well, I did it. And the screensavers are working. Thank you for your
help, Dennis. I didn't realize that I was installing the wrong kernel.
I'll be more careful in the future.

And I still have a bug. :) Okay. The only thing I saw that had
'suspend' in the name was the linux header files. The kernel itself is
the one I got straight from the Ubuntu packages. So, I'll try and
uninstall the headers and install the ones from the Ubuntu site as well.

Yes, you still have the wrong kernel installed...
But this is a bug tracker and not a support forum, so you'll have better
chances of getting support elsewhere.

Please, help a newb out here. This is my first installation of Linux
and I've been having a heck of a time getting things to work. Right
now, better than half my screensavers show nothing but a white screen.
I need some help.

Okay. This is what 'dpkg -l linux-* | cat' shows now:

Whew! Thanks for telling me that. I used them because they're the only
ones that showed up in Synaptec. So what I've done is uninstall them,
went to Ubuntu's package search and downloaded the version that came up
there.
Gonna reboot now. Wish me luck. hehehe I hope it boots right.

The ones you have installed have 'suspend2' in their version. Those are
not from Ubuntu.

Then why are you saying that I'm using a third party kernel?? That's
what I boot to from grub every time. And I just checked it in Synaptic.
That's what I have installed.

Okay. I installed the 2.4.27-2 kernel and tried to boot it, but got the
following error. Could you tell me what it means, please.
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 16:05

Okay. I'll download the latest Ubuntu kernel, directly off the site,
and install that. If that works, you won't hear from me about this
anymore.

Ok, 'new driver' you say -- did you perhaps enable a 3rd party software
repository? Please give the output of
dpkg -l xserver-xorg-driver-fglrx | cat
dpkg -l linux-* | cat
