This problem seems to have gone with the latest version of gwibber that
I installed today.
Just FYI, I was running gwibber-service manually as well, but as I
didn't use the debug flags I didn't get any meaningful output.

Hi,
I suggest that after you kill gwibber-service and gwibber, you manually start
*both* of them. Try opening two terminal windows; in the first, run:
gwibber-service -d -o
(That is, debug mode, output to the console/terminal.)
