I can also observe the memory usage increase when installing and
removing applications. However the increase seems to happen at the end
of the (un)installation, not during it.
After installing and then removing amarok and abiword, the memory
consumption of software-center had jumped by approximate

I can confirm that software-center has a huge memory leak. Each time you
click on "Provided by Ubuntu" it will consume additional 25 MB of RAM.
Seems like it's recreating the cache each time.
