@mike: The default permissions on my computers for /var/lib/dpkg were
drwxr-xr-x and for /var/lib/dpkg/status it's -rw-r--r--. Can you still
reproduce this problem? If not, we will close this bug because of the lack of
the information required to reproduce.

I chmod the permissions on /var/lib/dpkg to rwxrwxrwx and was able to use
the updater. However, I forgot to make a note of the original permissions on
dpkg.
Everything seems to be working great, now. If you could, would you please
send me what the default permissions for dpkg should be?

help us diagnose the problem.
