Bump - this problem still exists. The only way I can use my USB
soundcard via non-phonon programs is to use oss (which is obviously
undesirable) rather than alsa.

USB Sound Card not working in Kubuntu (with Alsa)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570663
You received this bug notification because
Since trying that fix, I now can't use alsa as an input anymore. Removing
the linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic package didn't help either.
Now I'm stuck with using OSS for these programs again! Any other ideas?

No - the problem was PARTIALLY resolved by updates some time in the last few
weeks (I can now hear sound through the USB card if I select ALSA on
programs), but I still can't adjust the volume.

That's from the Lucid repo proper. Are you implying that the l-b-m-a
resolved the symptom?

However, the following was successful:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic

Hmm...
W: Failed to fetch
http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-/ppa/ubuntu/dists/lucid/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz
404 Not Found
(while updating)
and then:
Couldn't find package linux-alsa-driver-modules
The audio started working recently via my USB card with alsa programs, BUT
it still does
Can you reproduce this symptom using linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-
generic and linux-alsa-driver-modules-$(uname -r) from ppa:ubuntu-audio-
dev?
