Sounds like 3d was simply turned off. The i855 driver is not well
supported and presumably the combination of that plus an unusual system
configuration was triggering this bug.

OK, so it seems that it's not "3d" that's causing the issue. Two things
then:
1. the 2D launcher is ultra-slow under the 5 intel driver.
2. when I select to start the "Netbook 2d launcher" when I login via
the graphical login screen, it puts up a semi GNOME desktop instead of
just launchin
So, that's a screenshot of the netbook-launcher-efl (2D) interface :).

I suspect that you actually weren't using the 3D launcher at all with
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu4. That had 3D turned off
(confirmed in your logs), and netbook-launcher will automatically launch
the 2D netbook-launcher-efl when it detects that there isn't a hardware
3D driver.

This is indeed strange, since -3ubuntu4 was supposed to be painfully
slow, since DRI was disabled, and -3ubuntu5 re-enabled it. Could you
attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of dmesg for both versions?
