For me VLC never shows up in the list that is shown when you select
"Open With Other Application" in Nautilus. I've tried right-clicking on
mp3 files, video files etc but the result is the same. What is required
in order for an application to show up there? VLC does list the mime
types it support
Probably related to: #34594 then ?

applications have to declare that they can open a non-local file to be
listed, reassigning to vlc
