Hi Christopher,
I had no further issues with this release after applying the mainline
kernel, as per my #8 update:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/568939/comments/8
Since then, I have my D505 laptops running 11.4 and 11.10 with no
similar issues.

Upgraded to 10.10 Maverick today, and the issue is gone. Screen output
is fine, I am also getting a mouse pointer (i.e. #631494 is also
solved).
Backporting the graphics driver from Maverick would probably solve the
issue also on Lucid.

Same here, Lifebook S7010 with Intel 8285x (82852 or 82855, at least
that's what the Windows driver supplied by Fujitsu-Siemens reports).
Looks like this is the same issue as in #576294, we might consider
closing one with reference to the other, in which we continue our work.

Hi. Same problem here with a Gateway 6021gz. This is also an Intel 855
GM chipset. 9.1 works great. No luck with 10.04

Marcel, I appreciate now a little better the challenges faced when Linux
versions are released, and also how many people are involved in this
adventure called Ubuntu!
Thanks for explaining.

Colm, that solution suggests installing an mainline (upstream) kernel.
We've established they boot (see comments #3, #7, #8, #10) but it's not
a perfect solution because those kernels aren't modified for specific
Ubuntu releases (see Limitations on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds)
A solution to this issue is posted on Ubuntu forums.
See post titled "Stuck with black screen on booting after 10.04 upgrade" See
comments #7, 8,9 and 10 especially.

It seems that the latest Linux kernel versions don't yet work with Intel
