I have similar problem with my Fujitsu Siemens LIFEBOOK S6120.
After the upgrade I could not start with (default) kernel version
2.6.32-21-generic, but with 2.6.31-21-generic it is working.

I can also confirm that the mainline build of 2.6.32-0206321203-generic
from /~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.12.3-lucid boots cleanly on a D505,
with no problems launching gdm.

I did the upstream testing with mainline kernels
2.6.32-02063211-generic, 2.6.32-0206321203-generic and
2.6.32-02063212-generic, and wasn't able to reproduce the bug.

I would like to confirm this issue. I completed the upgrade freom 9.10
to 10.4 this morning and had exactly the same issue. Also booting from
livecd, screen blanks and I never get to the install option screen.
model is Dell D505 with 1GB Ram and 60Gb HDD

Thanks for the reply. FYI, both test laptops are at work but I am on

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-ups
To confirm, recovery mode does boot into the CLI and the failure occurs,
as above, when gdm is launched.
