Thanks for the update. I did have a .comments directory and upon removing it,
gthumb worked again.
I didn't add any comments to the photos that I know of. Is it possible they
already had comments that gthumb put there?

Forget about comment #2, the -dbgsym package seems to be broken and does not
yield a better bug report. But o my surprise today I could not start gthumb
anymore, but got the same problem as you.
I tracked the problem down: gthumb crashes because it can't read the comments
generated by a newer ve
Two more questions, because the backtrace seems to suggest a problem with
comments instead of one with a large number of files:
1. Does the image successfully loads if you copy it to another directory with
less images and try to open it from there?
2. Did you ever set a comment for the file?
