Yup, this happens on my Thinkpad T61p running 10.10 x86-64 as well:
* Left-click the applet icon and then try to adjust brightness and slider
control is unclickable (and hops to the far left of the screen)

YES. Ii gets me too, on my little Eee 1015PED. Brightness works fine
through other control. I had it in Lucid, and now it's still in
Maverick.

That's an interesting trick...
If I do that, open the slider and then right click on help, then mouse clicks
work ok and the laptop's screen brightness is correctly affected too...
I can also change brightness in System -> Preferences -> Power
Management with no problems...
