This is a fresh install of 32bit Ununtu.
Live CD was showing an immediate blank screen, before even the splash screen.

Set nomodeset using F6 and then installed.
No changes made to xorg.conf

Hi Alberto,
I can't change this setting: all three options of the "visual effects"
tab are grayed, though I can see that the active option is "None".
Anyway, if I uninstall nvidia and fall back to the nouveau driver, it is
the same (but the UNE menu icons show as expected, with transparency).

What happens if you try to enable the 3d effects in the
System->Preferences->Appearance menu?
