After another look at the code, this does still seem to be deliberate,
if still counterintuitive. When drawing the header selection popup,
there's a comment that reads:
// if we currently only show one of either sender/receiver column
// modify the popup text in the way, that it displays
I had to reread the description a few times, stare at the screenshots
for a while, and play with it myself in kmail, but I see what you're
describing now, and I can confirm it.

Sorry, you got it wrong, this is not the feature you described.
This is not about the message list columns themselves but the 'View
Columns' context menu where you add/delete columns to/from you message
list view. This contect menu appears if you right-click with your mouse
on a column header in t
I can't reproduce in kde 3.5.4, but possibly I'm misunderstanding the
description. Possibly it's a deliberate feature, as I found in the Changelong
from Jan 23 1999:
