Another piece of information: When I create the .gz file using Nautilus
in gnome it works. Only get a seg fault when using the command line or
when invoked from a script. Hope this helps.

I'll see what I can do about getting a backtrace. I have had this
happen with at least two different .tar files, one of them is about 50MB
and the other is approximately 600MB. I cannot attach the .tar files as
they contain confidential information. I will also see if I can produce
a .tar file t
It would also be useful if you attached the offending .tar file here as
well.
