Actually, after finding that the same problem exists on my laptop as on my desktop, I found that all you actually need to do is to close Empathy and restart it to make the extra contacts disappear. As for my laptop, it is also Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit, running on a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6960. -- Empa
