Based on jiang's comments, I am marking this as fixed. People might also try:
oprofile --deinit
modprobe oprofile timer=1
oprofile --init
which is what I needed to do to get oprofile to work within qemu-kvm
recently.

With OProfile 0.9.3, and Ubuntu 8.04, I can run oprofile. Just need to
use RTC mode for vmware virtual machine.
