I tried the latest kernel available :
uname -a
Linux francoisTest-laptop 2.6.34-020634rc5-generic #020634rc5 SMP Tue Apr 20
10:07:04 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
=> Same behaviour
=> The "noapic" kernel option solved the problem.

If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-up

It seems the issue is not specific to Ubuntu Lucid.
=> same problem.
=> The "noapic" kernel option fixes it as for Ubuntu 10.04
