This just happened to me. fsck stopped at 71%. It gave no indication
why, and all I could do was press ctrl-alt-delete to reboot. The next
time, however, the system booted fine.
My /dev/sda1 is ext4 (/), /dev/sda2 is NTFS (my windows partition), and
/dev/sda3 is swap.

disk 1 root = ext4
disk 2 home = ext3 (on check system hang)
In 9.4:
disk 1 root = ext3
disk 2 home = ext4
disk 3 user data (same disk 2 on 10.4) = ext3 (any problem report)
