I see nearly the same except that my system does not show the "Starting
up.." string, but only a cursor that keeps on blinking indefinitely.
I have seen this on my system ever since I installed lucid alpha 2 (My
system is new and I didn't extensively use karmic because than I don't
have wifi).

I tested the following kernel: 2.6.34-999-generic
(linux-image-2.6.34-999-generic_2.6.34-999.201004051003_i386.deb) and the boot
is OK. It is not totally satisfactory since the Nvidia driver is not loaded.
These errors are displayed:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA Kernel module!

Could you also please test the latest mainline kernel and see if this solves
the problem?
