It affects me too. When using a XMPP connectione (like Facebook), after
closing empathy I appear as "online" in Facebook for about an hour.

be nice if you could test this with the most recent version of empathy,
from Lucid. Go to https://edge.launchpad.net/~telepathy/+archive/ppa
and add the PPA to your sources and install the updated packages to see
if it's fixed
