Adam Felson, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

Updated to 10.10 today. Problem is still the same. But I experienced a
new phenomenon: display is left on while suspending (as always) but then
there are horizontal lines and the screen gets "cloudy" and those clouds
get brighter and brighter (display back light?). Turned off the system

Yes. If I don't use nomodeset then it won't hibernate or suspend
without crashing.
There was another problem with ubunth post 8.04 where it would crash
with the up-shift indicator on and the new kernel has mostly fixed it
although it still will crash after a few days.

Adam, do you need the nomedeset still with your non-tickless kernel?

I think I've found a solution. Building my own kernel and disabling
tickless system and setting processor family to pentium-M seems to have
cured the crashes.
After setting nomodeset to false I was able to use the laptop without it
crashing within an hour or two of waking up from suspend or hiber

I can confirm the bug. Nomodeset and disabling compiz works also for me.
I have no problem with wireless driver (intel2100), but I had to disable
hardware acceleration for Flash to be able to see Flash videos with
Firefox. Disabling compiz makes Docky unusable, which is an irritation.

Previously it couldn't make it 2 hours without locking up.
To summarize: solution f
With nomodeset, it'll suspend and hibernate without locking up during
the process, but it'll lockup hard with the caps light flashing within
90 minutes of use (often within 10 minutes) after suspends or
hibernates.

Hello Adam
Why don't you use compiz on yout laptop?
I had an Acer 1601 - Pentium 4 with an ATI Radeon graphics board - and
it ran compiz nicely,
Best regards

Tried ubuntu 10.04 again on my ibm thinkpad x31.
Suspend and hibernate still caused lockups.
Tried nomodeset and now everything works perfectly.
I could not detect the slightest performance hit.
Granted, I do not run games, compiz, or anything fancy.
What I did test was high speed scrollling in a
Whilst that solves the issue it also reduces graphics performance
greatly, so I would only consider it a temporary workaround.

I think the problem may also be with the ath_pci driver
8.04 used madwifi iirc.

Did some further testing:
if KMS is enabled there is no difference if I enable/disable compiz or
metacity-compositor or use plain metacity without effects... it will fail in
all variants possible to wake up.

I installed 10.04 (i386) final today (clean install) and had the same
problem on my X31. After trying a bit I found the following:
- disabled KMS + disabled compiz + disabled metacity-compositor --> suspend and
hibernate both work
- disabled KMS + enabled compiz + disabled metacity-compositor -->
It's not fixed I took ubuntu 10.04 off the laptop.
