Exactly the same issue on shutdown. Using plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu2.
Changed grub to 1280x800 and using the proprietary nvidia driver.

I am using plymouth 0.8.2-2ubuntu2 and have the same issue.
Though I must admit that I made changes to /etc/default/grub and
/etc/grub/00_header to get a resolution of 1280x1024 with the binary
Nvidia driver.

You can check this by running in a terminal the command
apt-cache policy plymouth
