One workaround for this would be to use the standard indicator applet
session and remove the MeMenu by uninstalling the package indicator-me.

The monochrome icon is already present.and named as "system-shutdown-panel"
The applet needs to use the icon , the applet instead uses "system-shutdown"
icon instead.
Closing the theme task, as this needs fixing only in the applet.

I know you are swamped with other issues, I just decided to file this
because there was a huge discussion about having a monochrome icon for
banshee. So I thought, why not here?
The applet I mean is the "shut down" applet for gnome-panel. I would
help with the freeze exception process if I could.
not sure what the applet you are talking about is using but it's not in
the default configuration and we are swamped with issues in the default
installation for lucid, it would require somebody to care about this one
to do the patch and ask for the ui freeze exception required too
