I get this too.
The problem is a missing /etc/openoffice/sofficerc file.
The correct contents of this file:
[Bootstrap]
Logo=1
ProgressBarColor=0,0,128
ProgressSize=-1,6
ProgressPosition=-1,-1
Creating the file with those contents fixes the problem for me.
