After three days of deleting startup programs, deleting sound apps,

This has started happening to me since installing the RC. I had no
issues up until then and now it's all the time. A reboot often solves it
for me (or two or three).

on Lucid Beta 2 machines still.

just tried latest daily image. now it is working again. maybe this has
something to do with the persistence feature available when booting from
USB sticks (just a wild guess)...

just booted latest lucid amd64 daily from 2010-april-05. i experience
the same problem. no sound and only dummy device available in pulse
applet. so i am reopening...

Ok, killing pulseaudio and restarting it solves the problem partially,
but indicator-applet sound volume icon still shows dashes, but I can now
mute, unmute the sound, i can see the output devices, and there is
sound. After removing and readding the indicator-applet everything is
back to normal. So

This isn't a pulseaudio issue. Some other application grabbed the sound
device *before* pulseaudio was able to initialize its alsa sink/source,
so pulseaudio fell back to this "null" sink.
You probably have something in your session login or boot sequence that
is hogging the sound device. See also
