This bug report is being closed due to your last comment regarding this
being fixed with an update. For future reference you can manage the
status of your own bugs by clicking on the current status in the yellow
line and then choosing a new status in the revealed drop down box. You
can learn more a
removing gconf/.../empathy and rebooting did the trick.

I see this bug in both my i386 and AMD64 versions of Ubuntu 9.10.
In the mean time I've switched to Pidgin.
But I would rather use Empathy (Same version as #1)

Can you please try to delete all you accounts and quit empathy and then
start again and create the accounts again. During this process please
also reboot your system after deleting accounts.
