I did the following: logged in to failsafe-gnome, with wired connection.
Command:
lsmod | grep -i nv
did not give any output.

I had this mirror problem also after updating, on an EEE PC 1005HA. It

[ubuntu lucid] Desktop unusable after upgrade
When I login using gnome-failsafe or xterm then no wireless connection
is offered (while ifconfig does show that wrireless is present), but the
computer is autoconnected to a wireless connection. Bug or "feature"?
When gnome is used for login, both wired and wireless connections are
autoconnected.
