hmm it's the jka-compr-ccrypt that interacts badly on 23.
If I remove that one it works in both versions. To bad I have all my
passwords in a encrypted file so I use this feature quite a lot.

Can't reproduce this here on karmic with same emacs23 23.1+1-4ubuntu3.1.
Can you please start your emacs as "emacs -q" and try again to see if
something from your .emacs causes this? I
