after uninstalling xsplash.

Thank you for your bug report. Your issue is that xsplash waits for
gnome-panel to tell it that it has loaded, which doesn't happen in your
case. xsplash is not used in Lucid, so that's not an issue anymore. You
can work around it in Karmic by uninstalling xsplash
