It is apparently pulseaudio: Now it went bad after logging out and in
again. But after stopping pulseaudio with -k and restarting with -v
it was good again.

Since the mic is showing up in the "Hardware" tab of the pulseaudio
controls, I'm also thinking this is a pulseaudio issue, and not a kernel
issue.

The analog *internal* mic input is working. That was a bit off-topic, it
just makes the issue less severe for me. The USB audio comes and goes
between reboots. Within a session (I will have to double-check for boot)
it stays. I wonder how I can debug this. Comparing the alsa-info.sh

If the mic is working, what's the problem? Is it only working
intermittently? Can you describe in detail what you mean by
intermittent? Does it work or not work during a single boot, or does it
come and go during a single session?

Now the problem is back again, so maybe it is intermittent. But contrary
to what I said earlier, the internal analog mic input works (again).

Now everything is fine with -16. Go figure. There was a pulseaudio
update in between, maybe it changed things to the better. I will reopen
the bug if it appears again.

2.6.32-15.22-generic works fine. This is kind of severe for me, since
the built-in analog mic input does not work in Ubuntu.
For comparison I will rerun apport-collect using this kernel.
