Same problem using a VAIO, but with no nVidia graphics, just integrated
855GM, so I'm guessing this isn't an nVidia problem.
That or I have an entirely different problem.

I confirm the bug with Lucid final release. XServer runs on the VGA
output (so the OS is visible only if a monitor is plugged in). I had to
use the EDID extracted from windows to have the laptop LCD recognized. I
have a Sony VAIO CW2C5E with a nVidia 310M graphics card.

I think a have the same problem.
Basically the Live CD hangs - just a blank screen.
I'm using the released version of lynx 10.04.
I have attached my m$ windows system info.
I don't know how to get into the text mode (sorry :-)
I have an Intel core i7 and an ATI Radeon HD 5700 graphic card.

On my Sony Laptop 9.10 with the nv-driver worked fine as well. The only
thing that didn't work was the external monitor which is connected by
the DVI-port of the docking station. I installed Lucid now and booted it
with the option 'nomodeset' and then istalled the nvidia-driver. I read
that because
on my sony notebook with geforce 310m ubuntu 9.10 works mostly fine. but
after upgrading this bug also affected me :( currently i can't boot
system with new kernel, but with kernel from 9.10 all works fine.

That shouldn't be necessary. Just the knowledge that the -nv driver can
drive your laptop monitor should be useful.
The nouveau devs might ask for an mmiotrace of the nvidia binary driver
bringing up the external monitor. I'll look at putting instructions on
the Ubuntu wiki about how to take a t
@Chris: That's correct. In Karmic with the nv-driver I can only use the
laptop's internal monitor, the external is not detected. When I use the
nvidia-driver only the external monitor ist detected, the only screen I can
select in the settings is the external monitor.
Shall I attach the dmesg, th
@Marius: Your problem is definitely not the same problem as this one.
It sounds like your problem might be more like bug #542950 - perhaps you
could have a look at what's been done there and try it out?
@Bernie: So the nvidia binary drivers don't work properly on your laptop
in Karmic, either? Th
something similar happens to me too with lucid beta1.. i can hear the

No, Itried but the Lucid Beta1 Live-CD neither works with the laptop's internal
monitor nor with the external monitor.
When I work with my installed Karmic and the nvidia-driver only the external
monitor is detected whereas with Karmic and the nv-driver only the internal
monitor is detected.

Ok. Nouveau is failing to work out how to drive your laptop's internal
LCD. I suspect that if you plugged in an external monitor it would
work.
I'll forward this upstream. It's likely that the Nouveau project will
want a mmiotrace of the binary nvidia drivers bringing up X properly.

What version of the Lucid LiveCD did you try? From your logs it looks
like you were trying the Alpha 3 livecd, which had this problem and is

If you were trying the Alpha 3 livecd, it would be great if you could

Hi bernie,
Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
