Could you please give instructions on how to install it? From what I can
tell I should probably uninstall linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-
generic and install linux-alsa-driver-modules-karmic-generic. However I
can't find the latter package, even after enabling the ppa.

Same issue here with Macbook Pro 5-3. Tried the above as well. Reverted to -19
for now.

Please *remove* /lib/modules/2.6.31-20-generic, then forcibly reinstall
linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic as Luke asked, then *do not* compile alsa-
driver yourself. Please use linux-alsa-driver-modules from ppa:ubuntu-
audio-dev.
