Please use latest stable release of Ubuntu Lucid and check if this
behaviour is still affecting you. Also if you are able to do a fresh
install of your system would be great because a developer release is
always changing packages.

I manually installed the "ubuntu-desktop" deb package from the official
repos, I guess if this had have been done via teminal apt-get command i
probably would not have noticed it. Everything related to it is running
fine now.

Did you manually install ubuntu-desktop afterward, or is it still
missing from the system? The package itself does not have any
functionality, but it has a lot of dependencies for your desktop related
tasks.

It was a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 3, I was installing a deb
package from a website and i noticed this on dependency list. I exited
and tried another deb package (again from an external website) and the
same dependency was reported again.
As far as I know nothing was don prior to this to

any packages that might have uninstalled ubuntu-desktop by accident?
