Of course it affects other apps' volume levels - it's modifying the
sound device's hardware mixer.
With xine-lib's ALSA output, it's possible to select whether the volume
setting is done via the hardware - use the "audio.alsa_hw_mixer" setting
in the front end's preferences/setup window.
