that would require some code running all the time only to watch this key
in case nautilus is not running, the option is not changed often enough
and opening a nautilus dialog is easy enough, that's not worth using
ressources only for this corner case, closing the bug

The show_desktop flag works (on Hardy) when a nautilus window is open.
It's still perhaps a bit confusing. It would help if there was a
preferences setting for 'show desktop' which would fire up nautilus if
necessary (presumably this logic does not belong to gconf-editor).

could you try on hardy and confirm you get the issue when a nautilus
dialog is open? if you don't open a dialog and desactivate the
background rendering nautilus is not running until you open a dialog

Confirmed in edgy eft k2 too. I found a stupid workaround. Run a
terminal, type "nautilus", then you get a new instance of nautilus and
icons on desktop! Close nautilus and desktop disappeares and returns!

Added remote bug at the GNOME bt.
It appears that the upstream developer (Sebastien :) ) seems to think that
nautilus is not running -- however Nautilus is running when the gconf change is
made.
