Basically you need to install the linux-386 package to make sure
upgrades work.
sudo apt-get install linux-386
The main package you are looking for is linux-restricted-modules-386 and
it's dependencies.

Please be sure that this is the case. I cannot find where this message
comes from.
When you boot, get to the grub menu, and edit the menu entry for this
kernel. Make sure that both flags are absent from the command line.

Next, today I found that there was a kernel update:

Need to get 21.6MB of archive
I have removed these two 'flags' from the kernel boot-up line in my grub
config file and rebooted, however the result was exactly the same.
